I was hired by a local producer to produce this graphic that represents all the Brazilian comedies released in theaters from 2009 to 2013. It was really painful to sort through the data provided by the government because for them there are only three genres: “Live Action”, “Animation” and “Documentary”. So yes, I had to hand pick every one, even the ones no one knows about and were release in only one movie theater. (click here for the PFD)
The producer had an appointment to pitch her own feature to the Brazilian government and liked my idea that movies should be produced with at least know some idea of what similar projects managed to profit. I was glad to do it because, in Brazil, filmmakers usually couldn’t care less. In my opinion this was only requested because the Comedy Genre is the only one with actual competition for a market share. Thus, the new and increasing need to plan for it.
It’s great to see some peaks of obvious profit but since this data doesn’t take into account the costs of distribution it’s hard to tell witch ones survived in the end but I’d guess that the ones that didn’t make more than double the price tag actually failed at the box office.
On the positive side, there are some good examples of successful films for many reasons that the filmmakers should take a closer look because they surely go beyond a good story (even if it’s the most important part of the film).
